1) I bought these to use as gifts, but I can not find an opening to put my insert into the napkin ring. HELP!

I have done the napkin rings and they do come apart. the way I did it was put two fingers inside the napkin ring and the thumb on the outside body of the napkin ring, and with the other hand, fing that little rough spot where the plastic mold was attached to the napkin rind and put you finger on that rough part and pull away. The rings do come apart.
